Tamara Lunger

Visitors to the upcoming European Outdoor Film Tour will be able to hear from one of the few women to have climbed the world’s second-highest mountain without supplementary oxygen.

Tamara Lunger will take to the stage at London Met University’s Rocket Complex next month to introduce her film Tamara, which sees her summit K2, reputedly the hardest 8,000m climb in the world.

We had the pleasure of the 28-year-old mountaineer’s company recently on a walk up to her parents’ mountain refuge 2,305m (7,562ft) up at the Latzfonser Kreuz in the Sarntaler Alps. When not serving Tyrolean goulash to hungry hillgoers, she’s one of the world’s top climbers and ski mountaineers, and has some interesting insights about her spiritual approach to tackling 8,000m peaks.

The screening of Tamara: At the Peak of Emotions takes place on Friday 6 November.

The film tour kicks off this weekend with pro slackliner Jaan Roose, co-star of Masters of Slack, on stage at the Royal Geographic Society in London on Saturday 31 October and Bristol St George’s the following day. By a remarkable coincidence, slacklining legend Andy Lewis was also on the Latzfonser mountain that day and gave an impromptu demonstration of his art, even tempting Tamara Lunger to test her balance. He’s the inspiration of the Estonian pro Roose, and features in Masters of Slack, a short directed by Matthias Edlinger.

On Tuesday 3 November, the Mammut and Gore-Tex sponsored European Outdoor Film Tour hits Glasgow, with pro freeride skiers Matthias Haunholder and Matthias Mayr joining the show at the Mitchell Theatre to talk about Onekotan – The Lost Island, their incredible journey to ski a volcano at the heart of an uninhabited Russia island in the freezing cold North Pacific Ring of Fire. The pair move across to Edinburgh’s Portobello Town Hall the following day.

Finally, the tour heads to Sheffield Students Union on Monday 9 November, then Manchester Comedy Store on Tuesday 10th, returning to Bristol St George’s on Wed 11th, with a finale at Birmingham’s Crescent Theatre on Thursday 12th.
