A climber was airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a fall on a Northumberland crag.

Two rescue teams were called out to the scene at Peel Crag near Once Brewed about 3.25pm on Saturday.

Volunteers from the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and the North East Ambulance Service hazardous area response team were joined by the Great North Air Ambulance at the site after the climber fell about 10m (33ft) on to boulders and uneven ground.

A Northumberland National Park MRT spokesperson said the teams worked together to help get the injured climber down a steep slope and across uneven ground to the waiting helicopter.

The climber was then flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne for further treatment.

The rescue involved 15 mountain rescue volunteers and lasted 1½ hours.
