Two rescue team members are swapping their home Pennine terrain for a daunting climb in the Pennine Alps.
Jacques Crowther and Rich Quinn will attempt to summit the Matterhorn next month to raise funds for Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team.
The pair will tackle the 4,478m (14,692ft) mountain via the Cresta del Leone – the Lion Ridge. They plan to summit the peak, one of the best known in the Alps due to its pyramid shape, over two days, staying at the Carrel Hut overnight before pushing up the final 650m to summit and descend on the second day.
They have set up an online fundraising page to bring in cash for the Mytholmroyd-based team.
Calder Valley SRT is currently in the process of upgrading radio and communication equipment. As part of this process, it needs radio repeaters which cost about £1,500 each. These will be placed at fixed locations throughout the Calder Valley and around the team’s operational area to boost radio signals and improve communications.
The two competent climbers aim to raise enough for one of the radio repeaters.
They said: “We will be staying in Chamonix where most of our trip will be spent acclimatising to the altitude and practising the techniques that will be required on the Matterhorn.
“This is because success relies on being able to move quickly and efficiently when we’re on the hill. If we take too long, we’ll simply run out of time.
“We are paying for this challenge entirely ourselves, but we are doing it for a reason and need everyone’s support.”
Donations to the two men’s appeal can be made via the MyDonate page.
