Two Lakeland walkers were led to safety after getting lost as night began to fall.

The couple called for help on Monday after finding themselves on rough ground north-east of Great Dodd in the Helvellyn range.

The pair were attempting a circular walk up Swirral Edge to Helvellyn, returning via Sticks Pass, but missed the turning to the east and ended up further north. They called for help as the light began to fade.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted and made their way to High Row above Dockray from where they made their way on foot to find the two walkers. They then escorted them down and returned them to their vehicle in Glenridding.

The rescue operation involved four team members an lasted two hours.
