A father and son were rescued after getting lost on Snowdonia mountains in stormy weather.

Ogwen Mountain Rescue Organisation also had to curtail its annual fundraising challenge due to the unseasonal weather on Saturday.

The Oggi 8 Challenge walkers were due to summit eight peaks but this was reduced to four and a running race round the route was cancelled.

The team was alerted about 4.30pm on Saturday as post-event celebrations were winding up.

A man and his 10-year-old were reported lost in low cloud on the Glyderau.

Chris Lloyd of the team said: “The only information we were given as to their whereabouts was that they were looking for Glyder Fawr having walked past Llyn Idwal.

“Once telephone contact was established, it was suspected that they might have overshot Glyder Fawr and were en route for Glyder Fach. A small search party of five was dispatched to Cwm Bochlwyd to scramble up to the ridge line.

“They located the lightly clad and lightly equipped lost party of two and walked them down the Gribin Ridge and to Idwal car park.

“They were brought to Oggi Base for about 9pm to enjoy hot tea and a choice of surplus cakes left over from the earlier event.”

Mr Lloyd said the boy’s father was advised against the wisdom of setting off at 2pm, both lightly dressed and navigating using only Google Earth.

The rescue team member said: “He took this on board and kindly made a generous donation to OVMRO before leaving for their holiday accommodation.”

Earlier in the day, Oggi 8 organisers decided to alter the challenge for the 80 sponsored walkers and runners due to ascend Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen, Carnedd Dafydd and Pen yr Ole Wen before dropping down to Idwal Cottage.

The planned route then involved summiting Y Garn, Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach and finally Tryfan before dropping down back to Oggi Base for a reception party.

Mr Lloyd said: “At 7am, about 50 hillwalkers set off into the low cloud, the odd shower and a stiff following breeze.

“It was decided that due to the poor weather, that only four of the eight peaks would be climbed and that the runners would not run. They were due to start at 11am.

“Everyone descended safely, though a bit damp, to Oggi Base, where the planned burger van from the Little Hut Food Company, Wild Horse Brewery and Heartland Coffees were hastily brought forward to supply luncheon.”
