A Lake District rescue team is celebrating a win that has left it tyred.

One of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team’s Land Rovers is sporting a complete set of new rubber thanks to a donation from a Lancashire company.

Roadrunner Tyres, based in the village of Cabus near Preston, offered a set of General Grabber tyres to the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association, the umbrella body for volunteer teams in Cumbria.

The association decided the fairest way to decide which of the 12 teams would receive the tyres was to hold a prize draw, and the Coniston team’s name was first out of the hat.

Coniston MRT team leader Rob Ingham said: “This is a really welcome donation. Coniston team uses a lot of the mountain tracks to access incidents and this often means vehicles and tyres are being pushed to their limits.

“The team is a charity and relies solely upon donations for support and this year income is down largely because of Covid-19. This represents a significant donation that should last for several years and we’re really grateful to Roadrunner Tyres and General Grabber for their support.”

Jade Benson of Roadrunner Tyres said: “We are really pleased to have been able to make this donation to Coniston MRT with the backing of General Grabber. We feel that the team will be able to use the General Grabber X3 to its full potential as it has been specifically designed for extreme off-road use. We wish the team many happy and safe miles in the years to come.”
