A woman was stretchered from a Lake District fell after injuring herself while walking with her family.

The walker attempted to make her way off the hills but was unable to continue her descent.

She had made the ascent of Scafell Pike with her husband and two sons on Tuesday and was making her way back to Seathwaite when she went over on her ankle.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, which went to her aid, said she valiantly tried to make her way down with help from her husband, but called 999 when they got to the Sty Head stretcher box as she could go no further.

A team spokesperson said: “Keswick sent two vehicles with team members who made their way up to Sty Head Pass.

“The lady was assessed, analgesia given and her ankle splinted and bandaged before starting the long stretcher carry down to Seathwaite.

“It was a beautiful evening to be out in the fells and to everyone’s relief we all made it down before dark. The couple then made their own arrangements to go to hospital for further checks.”

The 4½-hour incident involved 15 volunteers from Keswick MRT.
