Rescuers set out onto the slopes of England’s highest mountain with spare footwear after a pair of walkers got into difficulties when a boot fell apart.

The couple also became disoriented in darkness while descending from Scafell Pike via the Corridor Route on Wednesday.

Keswick Mountain Rescue was alerted at 8.45pm when the walkers called for help after deciding they couldn’t carry on.

A team spokesperson said: “A small team was dispatched with a spare pair of shoes to locate the couple and walk them down. With some warm clothing, food and a change of footwear, the uninjured couple were able to walk down with the team to Seathwaite.

“They were then driven to Keswick where a taxi was waiting to take them back to their accommodation in Bowness.”

Nine team volunteers were involved in the incident, which lasted 4¾ hours.
