A group of walkers tackling a Lake District scramble in severe weather called for help when they got into difficulties.

By the time rescuers reached the site on Sharp Edge, the four had managed to make their way off the ridge.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 10.25am on Saturday.

A team spokesperson said the men decided to make the ascent of Sharp Edge in strong winds and driving rain.

“They managed to negotiate the ‘slippy when wet’ slab on the ridge and made it to the notch before the steeper scramble to the top of the aptly named Foule Crag,” the spokesperson said.

“However at this point they became concerned about continuing and so called for assistance.

“Five team members made their way to the top of Sharp Edge with a plan to rope them up to safety. On arrival the team could not locate the four men on the ridge, and it transpired that they had self-rescued by scrambling down the tricky north gully.

“Another Keswick team met them on their descent and accompanied them down to the car park. Thankfully, all were uninjured.”

The incident involved 12 Keswick MRT volunteers and lasted almost three hours.
