A teenager had to call for help from a Lakeland crag after separating from his family.

The 18-year-old was on a walk up Scafell Pike but later struck out on his own.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, who were alerted when the man called police, said his family was unaware of his whereabouts and returned to Keswick via Seathwaite.

With no knowledge of his location and in an area with intermittent mobile phone coverage, the young man managed to ring police to request help after getting into difficulty.

A Keswick MRT spokesperson said: “Fortunately the police were able to get a fix on his location and a small Keswick team were dispatched.

“Further attempts to call the boy and his family failed so a search was made of paths leading from Seathwaite Farm before heading off up Seathwaite Fell.”

Eventually he was spotted, stuck on a ledge on Aaron Crags on Seathwaite Fell.

The spokesperson said: “Due to his precarious position he did the right thing in calling for help and thankfully he was uninjured. He was subsequently guided to over the top of the fell and down a safer route.”

He was later reunited with his family at Seathwaite.

The incident lasted just over 3¼ hours and involved eight volunteers from Keswick MRT.
