The Open Spaces Society is backing one of its members in his battle with a county council over a right of way.Alan High forced a U-turn when the Environment Secretary overruled Hampshire County Council’s decision not to place on the official map a byway at Longparish, near Andover.Kate Ashbrook of the Open Spaces Society However, the case is now likely to go to public inquiry, because of the council’s opposition.

A man has died on Helvellyn, four days after a fatality on the same mountain.David Thomas Burke, of Newcastle, fell to his death from Striding Edge, while walking with a party of five.

Two walkers safe after airlift from The Cobbler

Two men were airlifted from a Scottish mountain last night.Members of the Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team found the men on the side of The Cobbler, near Arrochar, in the Southern Highlands.The Cobbler A Royal Navy Sea King helicopter, which had been involved in the search for the pair, winched them to safety.

Everest conquerer Hillary dies, aged 88

Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb the world’s highest mountain, has died.His death was announced this morning by New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who said of the modest Kiwi: “Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities.

Walker dies after being blown off Helvellyn

A man died after falling from Helvellyn yesterday.Michael Hollinshead, 62, of Egerton, Bolton, Greater Manchester, was blown into Brown Cove, beneath Swirral Edge.  Mr Hollinshead fell 300m (985 ft) and sustained multiple injuries.Brown Cove, with Helvellyn's summit centre and Catstycam to the left Reports indicate he may have been having trouble with his crampons and was trying to adjust them when the accident happened.

A party of students is safe and well after being rescued from a flooded Yorkshire Dales cave.Eleven young cavers and two adult leaders were trapped in Dow Cave, near Kettlewell, Wharfedale, by fast flowing water.
