The great unwashed can now take action when they see common land being abused.New laws came into force at the weekend that give anyone the right to launch a court case if ‘unlawful works’, namely fences and buildings, are erected on commons.

Peak performance for Jebb in Three Peaks bike race

Rob Jebb confirmed his undisputed position at the top of the Yorkshire Three Peaks roll of honour with a sixth consecutive win in the gruelling cyclo-cross race this weekend.Rob finished in a time of 3 hours 0 mins and 56 secs, beating his 2005 time by 35 seconds.

Peak District research centre will aid moorland study

An eco-friendly moorland visitor centre will open in the Peak District next month.The Moorland Visitor Centre will also house a research centre for moorland issues, with a library for specialist study into the eco-system of the moors in the Peak.The visitor centre will be opened by the Duke of Devonshire on 14 September.

Rescue team says charity walkers are ill-prepared

Inexperienced charity walkers are putting lives at risk by venturing on to the Cumbrian mountains without the skill and knowledge they need.Mountain rescue teams are being called out to help parties taking part in the Thee Peaks Challenge who ring them when they encounter difficulties.

Everest teens to tackle pole-to-pole trek

Britain’s two youngest Everest summiteers now plan to go pole to pole.Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper will tackle the route from the North Pole to the South Pole without using motorised transport en route.The two 19-year-olds, who in May this year became the youngest Britons to get to the highest point on earth, are now planning the 17,000-mile trip ski-ing, walking, cycling and sailing the length of the globe, via north and south America and finally to Antarctica.They hope to ski from the North Pole to the edge of the ice pack, where they will use an ice-breaker yacht to reach Newfoundland.

Ramblers Association in footpath court battle

The Ramblers Association (RA), guardian of the right to continue to wear your walking breeches tucked inside your socks, is fighting an important legal case that could have implications for all those who love the outdoors.It’s all a bit legalistic, as the law tends to be, but basically, landowners were given the right in a High Court case in 1999 to claim there was no right of way under the ‘20-years’ use’ rule if they had a scrap of paper telling their gamekeeper to boot off the great unwashed, even if said gamekeeper never followed the instruction.

New maps issued for Scottish Explorers

The Ordnance Survey (OS) has issued updated Explorer maps for two areas of Scotland.The 1:25,000-scale maps cover Stranraer, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Dumfries and a further area in the East including Edinburgh, Dunbar, North Berwick and the Lammermuir Hills.Maps come off the Ordnance Survey's printing press (left)22 maps have been revised and are on sale at £7.49 for unlaminated versions, at the usual outlets as well as from the OS website. .
