Council agrees to talks on Henley path closure

Footpath campaigners have welcomed the announcement of talks on a controversial path closure.The Open Spaces Society (OSS) had urged Wokingham Council to delay the approval of the temporary stopping up of a national trail to allow a black-tie arts festival.Henley Festival had asked for a 145-hour closure of the Thames Path, where it passes through the town, to allow its annual society bash to take place.

Caver dies after Peak pothole rescue

A major operation was unable to save the life of a Peak District climber at the weekend.The 50-year-old man, from Rotherham, was rescued from the foot of Garland’s Pot in Giant’s Hole, one mile west of Winnats Pass near Castleton.

A south-coast climber was winched to a coastguard helicopter after becoming cragfast today.The 20-year-old man became stuck on a route 30m (100ft) above the sea at Anvil Point, Purbeck, Dorset.

Guided walks in Dales programme

Park authorities in the Yorkshire Dales have released details of activities in the area for the first half of next year.The programme includes plenty of guided walks in the national park, with themes ranging from herb and wild food identification to early morning birdspotting.Activities start in February, with the walking sessions beginning a month later with an open access land route around Cotterdale.

Rheged mountain exhibition shuts as numbers dwindle

The National Mountaineering Exhibition at Rheged, Cumbria, will close for good tomorrow, Christmas Eve.The museum’s owners failed to find funding for a cash injection for the exhibition, which has seen visitor numbers dwindle.

Peak teams rescue injured Kinder walker

Two mountain rescue teams came to the aid of a walker who slipped on ice on Kinder Scout in the Peak District.The 52-year-old injured his spine and pelvis in the fall above Jacob’s Ladder, on the Pennine Way on Friday.

Hypothermic walker among trio rescued from Snowdon

Three people were rescued from Snowdon after getting into trouble on the Pyg track.One of the three, who were all medical students from London, was evacuated by stretcher with hypothermia before being taken to the Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.Twenty members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the operation, which took more than four hours.

Man dies after fall on Sharp Edge

A walker died yesterday after falling 90m (300ft) from Sharp Edge on Blencathra in the northern Lake District.The man, aged 60, from Lancaster, was with his son when the accident happened about 1pm.

Naked Rambler Gough jailed for contempt

Naked rambler Stephen Gough is back behind bars after a sheriff jailed him for contempt of court.The controversial walker refused to wear clothes for the hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and was kept in the cells while the verdict was delivered.

There’s more flak flying from rescuers – this time aimed at ‘irresponsible’ climbers who had to be plucked from a sea cliff.Coastguard rescue teams were called to two men in their 20s who had gone climbing at night, without waterproofs, in high winds.

Camping canoeists were unaware of massive search

A squad of 20 coastguards, five police officers and numerous local volunteers spent hours looking for two canoeists who were feared lost – but were actually safely camped on a Scottish island.The search was called off after the pair, from Leeds, were spotted in the early hours on Innis Chonnell, on Loch Awe, south-east of Oban.

Floods close main road into Lakes

Heavy rain has affected much of the Lake District and police are warning visitors to take care on the region’s roads.Torrential downpours overnight led to the closing of the main route into the Lakes, the A591 northbound at Brettargh Holt, south of Kendal, because it was impassable due to flooding.

Police today named the man who died after a fall from Sharp Edge on Blencathra.He was Alan Sharples, aged 60, from Lancaster.
