Benn 'must act now' to save Peak landscape

Outdoor groups have told the Government it must act to save Britain’s first national park from being ravaged by quarrying.Backdale Quarry, Longstone EdgeBoth the Ramblers’ Association and the British Mountaineering Council have teamed up with other conservation groups to urge Labour ministers to fund an appeal against the resumption of work at Longstone Edge, the limestone quarry at the centre of one of the most protracted battles to preserve the landscape of the Peak District.This summer marks the fifth anniversary of quarrying restarting at Longstone by Bleaklow Industries and MMC under a 50-year-old consent.

More than 500 people have signed an e-petition to the Prime Minister demanding that lost footpaths are protected.20,000 footpaths are at riskThe petition, started by Janet Davis of the Ramblers’ Association, asks Gordon Brown to repeal sections of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act which will lead to any rights of way being lost forever if they are not recorded by 2026.

'Accidental death' verdict on Red Screes walker

An experienced fellwalker died after he fell 150m (490ft) from Red Screes in the Lake District.David Leo Pyle of Ambleside sustained multiple injuries in the fall, including several broken vertebrae in his neck, injuries to his head and several broken ribs, an inquest was told.

Concern is growing among outdoor professionals about what they see as a fundamental mistake in Downing Street’s rejection of the recent e-petition to allow wild camping in England.Wild camping in the Lake DistrictIn giving the thumbs-down to Darren Christie’s appeal to legalise wild camping south of the border, the Prime Minister’s office said: “On open access land wild camping is prohibited under Schedule 2 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, which lists all restricted activities.” Yet Andy Say of Mountain Leader Training England says this is not so.The act simply details restrictions on people exercising the right of access, one of which is camping.

Festival will shine light on Ingleborough

One of Yorkshire’s noted Three Peaks comes under the spotlight next month.Ingleborough and CrummackdaleWalkers will be able to find out more about Ingleborough during six days of events organised to give an insight into the 723m fell which was once the site of a Romano-British hill fort.There are the usual walks, as well as drystone walling workshops and a chance to brush up photography and art skills.
