Police have named a man who drowned in a canoeing accident in Cumbria.

David Thorne, 49, was from Talybont-on-Usk, Powys. He died after the two-person boat he was in capsized on Wednesday on the River Lune near Sedbergh.

Mr Thorne was swept away. His companion in the boat managed to swim to safety. His body was found the following day near the village of Barbon. Mr Thorne was married with two children. A statement released by his family said: “David Thorne was husband to Sue and father of Andrew and Elen.

“He loved the countryside and was an outdoor instructor. It was both his work and his hobby.

“He was much loved by his family and will be sadly missed by them and his large circle of friends.”

Mountain rescue teams, police divers and search dogs helped in the search.
