Climbers and walkers can join in a free open day this Saturday.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) is holding an open day at the Roaches, on the Staffordshire side of the Peak District, where the public can see what the council is all about.

There will be led climbs of what the BMC calls the hidden gems of the gritstone crags, as well as two guided walks which will centre on the landscape and wildlife of the area. It’s all free and starts at 10am. Venue is the Whillans memorial hut.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team will also be demonstrating its skills and there will be a chance for children to try bouldering routes. Refreshments are available and the BMC says there’s chance to finish off the day with a beer and a barbecue at the Whillans hut.

Details are on the BMC website.
