Cumbrian authorities are warning climbers and walkers that a major pass will be closed to traffic from next week.

Kirkstone Pass, linking Windermere with Ullswater, is being resurfaced at a cost of £200,000. Temporary traffic lights are being set up this week, but from Monday, 5 November, the road will be completely closed for up to five days.

Arrangements have been made to allow school buses and emergency vehicles through, but other traffic faces a long diversion via Penrith although, because the roadworks are at the Windermere end of the pass, canny mountain lovers should still be able to find a route through via Ambleside and The Struggle.

Expect delays though, whichever route you take.
