Negotiating a pitch in Lower Long Churn CaveThere’s another chance for caving virgins to get a taste of the underground world next month.

The Yorkshire Subterranean Society (YSS) is offering a weekend taster for those who fancy a trip below the Dales. Experienced cavers will lead novices through the underground passages carved out over thousands of years in the Yorkshire limestone.

Negotiating a pitch in Lower Long Churn Cave

Last year, grough joined YSS members for an enjoyable, if wet, excursion into the Long Churn system. If you fancy finding out what it’s like in the dark world of speleology, we can thoroughly recommend it. The YSS is a friendly club, based at Helwith Bridge, a mile out of Horton in Ribblesdale.

There’s a wealth of caves and potholes on the doorstep, and the club provides the specialist equipment for those who take part in the Try Caving weekend.

The event is on 29 and 30 March. Accommodation at the club’s headquarters is free for the weekend, and there’s a pub very close by!

The Try Caving event is also suitable for those who want to get back into the sport after a break from the activity.

To book yourself on the course, email the club at yorksubsoc@hotmail.co.uk.
