The West Highland Way near Bridge of OrchyThe mystery body found in a tent near the West Highland Way has been identified.

The remains, found by workers clearing a path in Auch Forest between Bridge of Orchy and Inveroran, have been confirmed as those of Nicholas Randall, who disappeared from his Edinburgh home almost three years ago.

Mr Randall was 31 when he disappeared on 25 April, 2005. Strathclyde Police are investigating the circumstances of the man’s death, but Lothian and Borders Police, his home force, say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Randall’s family issued a statement which said: “We would like to thank the missing-persons unit of Lothian and Borders Police for all their assistance and kind support over the last three years. We also thank the press for publicising our son's disappearance.

“Now that his body has been found and recovered, we ask that the media leave us to grieve in peace.”

Mr Randall’s car was discovered in Glen Nevis three months after his disappearance, and various sightings of him were reported in the western Highlands. He was an accomplished climber and hillwalker, but had suffered stress while working as a town planner.

A report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.
