Two Highland walkers are safe after spending the night on the hills.

A search was launched for the man and woman in their 40s, from Strathclyde, who were missing in the Inchnadamph area in Sutherland after going for a walk on Sunday. It was abandoned overnight because of bad weather but resumed at first light.

The pair appeared this morning after having sheltered on the hills in Glen Oykel. They had become disoriented in bad visibility, spent the night in a rudimentary snow shelter in appalling weather and walked off the hill once it became light.

A spokesman from the Northern Constabulary said the walkers were cold and wet but uninjured.

Assynt Mountain Rescue Team led the search. Its leader Willie Marshall said the pair were not properly equipped for the conditions.
