A climber is in a critical condition in hospital after falling from a Dartmoor crag.

The 58-year-old was with a climbing partner when both men fell 15m (50ft) from Dewerstone Rock, Devon. Their fall was broken by vegetation and a ledge. The older man suffered spinal injuries during the fall; his 28-year-old companion had leg injuries.

Paramedics had to carry rescue equipment more than a kilometre across the moor after receiving a 999 call from the younger climber about 8pm last night. Firefighters also assisted in the rescue and the injured men, believed to be from Torpoint, were airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by a helicopter from RAF Chivenor.
