French police have named the woman who died in a climbing accident in the French Alps.

Lydia Press, fell from the 3,800m (12,470ft) Tour Ronde while roped to her boyfriend Arnaud Viel. He fell too, but survived with leg injuries. Ms Press was 24; her partner is 26.

Police said the incident, which happened on Friday, took place in fine conditions on the mountain. Mr Viel was taken to Chamonix Hospital after his fall.

Ms Press was an Earth Sciences graduate of St Peter’s College, Oxford.

Police in the Chamonix area have begun an inquiry into the circumstances of the incident.
