A climber has died after falling from a Lake District crag.

The man, 45, from Preston, Lancashire, fell while using the descent route from Raven Crag in Langdale, suffering serious multiple injuries. It is believed he was climbing with two other people.

Members of the Langdale-Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team were called to help the climber at 5.20pm on Sunday. He was treated at the scene and airlifted by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer to West Cumberland Infirmary, Whitehaven, but died in the intensive-care unit early the following day, Monday.

A post-mortem examination was expected to be carried out tomorrow with an inquest likely to be opened next week. The man has not been named.
