The crags where Clare Wright died

A coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on a woman who fell earlier this year on Scafell.

Journalist Antonia Clare Wright – known as Clare – died from injuries she sustained when she slipped on Shamrock Crag, Wasdale. She was walking with her partner Michael Span when the accident happened.

West Cumbria coroner John Taylor heard that Ms Wright, 49, from Birmingham, was descending from the summit of the 964m (3,163ft) mountain when she lost her footing. She slid down a slope then fell a further 50m.

Mr Span then tried to go to his partner’s aid but fell himself, sustaining broken ribs and a fractured shoulder blade.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue team was called out and Ms Wright was airlifted to West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, along with Mr Span, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
