A walker has died after a fall on a Lake District crag.

The 35-year-old woman was with two others when she fell on Westmorland Crag on Great Gable. A team of 16 volunteers from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the woman’s aid and she was airlifted by an RAF Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer to West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Despite the best attempts of all the rescue services she was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Police said she slipped and fell, sustaining ‘very serious’ injuries. The incident happed about 1.10pm on Friday, 2 January. Mountain rescuers were at the scene for about four hours.

Cumbria Constabulary is now working to identify the woman and inform her immediate family.
