A man was airlifted from a Lake District fell yesterday evening after being taken ill.

The 18-year-old, from North Lincolnshire, was on an overnight camp on Gowbarrow Fell, near Dockray, Ullswater, when he began complaining of severe abdominal pain. Members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called to the man’s aid at about 4.50pm.

Nine rescuers went to the site, where the man was with a party of 11 campers. A spokesman for Patterdale MRT said: “Due to the difficult evacuation route and on medical advice a helicopter was called to evacuate the casualty.

“An RAF Sea King based at Leconfield that had just dealt with another incident in the Helvellyn area and was refuelling in Blackpool was tasked.”

Rescuers treated the man at the scene and he was then taken by helicopter to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for medical tests and treatment.
