Two walkers were airlifted to safety after getting lost at  night in the Highlands.

The pair were reported overdue at 8.55pm last night after going for a walk in the Kinveachy Forest, north of Aviemore. Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and dog handlers from both the Search and Rescue Dogs Association and Northern Constabulary joined the search.

Police managed to contact the walkers by mobile phone but could not pin down their exact location.

The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Kinloss despatched a helicopter but as it arrived at 3.20am on Wednesday, a police dog handler found the  pair.

A spokesperson for Northern Constabulary said both were uninjured.
