More than 30 mountain rescuers are taking part in a major operation to save an injured climber on one of Snowdon’s crags.

An RAF helicopter earlier tried to rescue the man and his two companions from Y Lliwedd, but was unable to get to the climbers. Rescue teams are now abseiling 150m (500ft) in the dark to reach the trapped climbers.

Members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and the RAF Valley Mountain Rescue Service are involved.

The injured climber will then have to be lowered a further 150m to safety at the foot of the crag after treatment.

Ian Henderson, secretary of Llanberis MRT, said the operation was expected to last through the night. The climbers were on the Ridge Route when they came to grief.

Earlier in the evening, the Llanberis team were called to the aid of five walkers who lost their way on Esgair Felen above the Llanberis Pass and became cragfast on its steep rocky ground.
