Members of a Lake District rescue team were left whistling in the wind this afternoon after an alert proved to be unfounded.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out after a member of the public reported what he believed to be distress whistle sounds near the summit of Helvellyn.

A spokesperson for the team said: “After interviewing the informant and sending personnel on to the fell it was decided that no further action was required and the team was stood down.”
