Everest climbers Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott will be among top names at a Lake District event exploring the attractions of adventure. The day is part of a programme drawn up by the Mountain Heritage Trust.

Joining Bonington and Scott will be Ed Douglas, Julie Summers, Colin Mortlock and Adele Pennington, who will discuss the psychology and benefits of the risks taken by mountaineers, whether Everest summiteers of weekend explorers.

The South Face of Annapurna film, which follows Sir Chris’s 1970 ascent of the mountain, will be shown in the morning and in the afternoon there will be a screening of Your Himalaya by Basque climber Alberto Iñurrategi.

The morning session, at the Lakes School, Windermere, will be on the theme of Paths of Adventure and will see Bonington and fellow Everest conqueror Scott joined by others on the panel. This will be followed by a question and answer session.

The Price of Adventure will be discussed in the afternoon, looking at risk, tragedy, motivation and reward. The Spirit of Adventure is the subject of an evening forum at the same venue, with a look at adventure education and commercialism in outdoor adventures.

MHT trustee and former chair Sir Chris Bonington said: “The key role of the MHT is to ensure that mountaineering’s fascinating heritage, artefacts, history and traditions are conserved, documented, made accessible and,  most importantly of all, communicated to a wide audience. There is nowhere more suitable for the job than Cumbria and this programme of symposiums will add to our joint appreciation of the fascinations mountains hold for us.”

Details and prices of the 20 February Adventure Summit can be found on the Mountain Heritage Trust website.
