A walker has died after a fall on a Snowdonia mountain.

The man fell about 40m (130ft) while on Pen yr Ole Wen with a companion. Police were alerted about 4pm yesterday, Friday, and members of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation went to the walkers’ aid.

A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley assisted the rescuers. A spokesperson for the North Wales Police said: “The man was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor where he was pronounced dead.

“No further details are currently available.”

The man is believed to have fallen into a gully on the 978m (3,209ft) mountain, which is in the Carneddau range overlooking the Ogwen Valley.

Both men were believed to be well equipped and wearing crampons. The uninjured companion was airlifted to the valley by the RAF crew.
