A climber suffered injuries to his arm and face after falling about 150m (500ft) on a winter route in the Lake District.

The 61-year-old from York was airlifted from the scene, the second accident in less than a week on Nethermost Pike. The man fell while climbing with two others in a snow gully on Nethermost Crag, Grisedale, this afternoon, Thursday.

Twelve members of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the climbers’ aid after being alerted by police just after 1.50pm. A spokesperson for the team said the man was conscious despite his injuries. “One of his companions raised the alarm by climbing to the summit in order to make a call from his mobile telephone which had no signal at the casualty site whilst the other looked after the injured man,” the spokesperson said.

“In view of the injuries and location of the incident a search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer was also requested.”

After being treated at the scene, the climber was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for further treatment.

The incident came five days after a climber was injured in Nethermost Gully. In that incident, a 50-year-old man from Preston suffered head, leg and spinal injuries in a fall.
