A walker was airlifted from a Scottish ridge after falling 15m (50ft) and injuring his head.

The 59-year-old man was with his 52-year-old wife when he fell down a steep gully on the path to the Quiraing on Skye.

The couple were visiting the area, famous for its volcanic landscape, from Michigan in the USA. Other walkers raised the alarm after the incident, which happened bout 12.30pm yesterday, Wednesday, and went to help the man and his wife, who also suffered a twisted knee after falling a short distance.

Scottish Ambulance Service paramedics requested the help of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team and a Coastguard helicopter from Stornoway flew the injured man to hospital. The pair were treated at Portree and Broadford Hospitals, but were both discharged.

Their names have not been released by police.
