A walker was airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a fall.

The 65-year-old woman fell while walking this afternoon near Black Beck Tarn, at the head of the Buttermere valley in the Lake District.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at about 3.50pm and 26 members were involved in the operation. The woman had suffered a serious head and eye injury and had also broken her wrist.

A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley flew the injured walker to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Black Beck Tarn lies between Haystacks and Dubs Quarry.
