Whernside, scene of today's rescue

A fellrunner was airlifted from Yorkshire’s highest mountain after injuring herself in a tumble.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was called to aid the runner at about 10.55am today after the woman slipped while descending from the summit ridge of Whernside towards Chapel-le-Dale.

The Clapham-based volunteers treated her for a suspected broken ankle before stretchering her back up to the ridge where an air ambulance was able to land and fly her to hospital.

The 736 m (2,415ft) fell is one of the Yorkshire Dales’ Three Peaks.

The incident was the 66th dealt with this year by the CRO which carries out search and rescue operations both in the caves and potholes of the Dales and on its fells.
