The Watlowes valley, scene of the rescue

A walker was airlifted to hospital after falling in the Yorkshire Dales.

The 66-year-old man was scrambling up the dry waterfall at the head of the Watlowes valley above Malham Cove yesterday when he fell about 10m (33ft).

Members of the Cave Rescue Organisation were alerted about 4.35pm and went to the walker’s aid.

A spokesperson for the CRO said he had suffered a broken ankle and possible back injuries. “Following treatment by paramedics the casualty was stretchered a short distance to an air ambulance by CRO,” the spokesperson said.

The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation’s volunteers carry out rescues both in the caves and potholes of the Dales and on its fells.
