Police have named the woman who died yesterday after she was hit by falling boulders while climbing on the Cuillin on Skye.

Tessa Cousins, 56, was from Cape Town, South Africa, and was self-employed.

A spokesperson for Northern Constabulary said three of the other people injured during the incident, including two men and a woman are recovering in hospital from their injuries.

Ms Cousins was belaying the lead climber on the Cioch Direct route on Sròn na Cìche when a large boulder broke loose and hit her on the head.

The man leading the climb suffered a broken leg and two other climbers, a man and a woman in a separate party, were also seriously injured by falling rocks.

One of them was transferred last night to hospital in Glasgow for further treatment.

Skye Mountain Rescue Team warned the Cioch Direct route was now in a dangerous state. A spokesperson said: “Any climbers intending to attempt the route in the near future should be aware that there will be considerable rockfall danger from the remaining debris.”
