Scottish Natural Heritage has doubled the number of car-parking places at a popular Highland nature reserve.
The parking area at the Muir of Dinnet reserve had space for only 17 vehicles, meaning it filled quickly and vehicles were left on the verges of the adjoining road, creating potential danger.
The opening of the extended area comes in time for an open day at the site on Sunday, offering free activities for families, including craft and storytelling sessions.
The nature reserve lies 2½ miles (4km) from Dinnet Village within the Cairngorms national park and is signposted from both the A93 Aberdeen to Ballater road and the B9119 at Milton of Logie.
The Muir of Dinnet reserve includes the Burn o’ Vat, a 25m-wide pothole carved out by retreating glaciers.
Catriona Reid, the reserve’s manager, said: “It’s great to have the extended car park open just in time for the school holidays and our open day on 3 July. It means more visitors can safely park here while they visit the spectacular Vat or enjoy a walk on the wider reserve.”
More details are on SNH’s national nature reserve site.
