A charity that helps look after Britain’s highest mountain is on the lookout for volunteers to help repair paths on the most popular route up the hill.

The Friends of Nevis are organising work parties next month to help a footpath specialist at two locations on Ben Nevis.

The Friends’ co-ordinator Liz Wilshaw said the organisation was looking for a minimum commitment of just one day, though volunteers are welcome to put their names forward for more dates if they can.

The work will be overseen by Martin McCrorie over a number of days in August around the level of Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe – the halfway lochan, at about 600m (1,969ft) – and on the path close to Glen Nevis Youth Hostel. Ms Wilshaw said: “Participants need to be able to walk in to the work site, helping to carry basic equipment such as spades and picks.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done anything like this before, as all equipment, training and supervision will be provided and we are also able to offer travel expenses, free camping pitches at the excellent Glen Nevis campsite and hopefully some vital refreshments – or at least a contribution towards them.”

She added: “If you are unable to take part yourself, you can still help by passing this information on to any reasonably fit and potentially interested people.”

The Friends of Nevis have set up an online Doodle calendar on which members of the public can put down their names for the dates in which they are interested.
