A woman has died after falling into a river in Snowdonia.

Police were alerted at about 11.25am today after the woman, in her 60s, slipped into the water at Pont Aberglaslyn, south of Beddgelert.

Inspector Gareth Evans of North Wales Police said: “Police, fire and rescue, ambulance and mountain rescue services were called to the scene and an extensive search of the area, involving the police helicopter and helimed was carried out.”

The woman’s body was found downstream about noon and recovered from the water. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation said: “The team was stood down shortly after arrival at the location as the lady had been found about a mile downstream.”

Police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.
