A group of walkers stranded on a mountain top was helped from the summit by rescuers who came across them by chance.

The five were on the summit of Corn Du in the Brecon Beacons today when a party of five Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team members who were walking in the area encountered them sheltering in storm-force winds.

A spokesperson for the rescuers said: “Although the people were uninjured, they were cold and too worried about being blown from their feet to make their way down safely.”

The team members formed a chain and passed the walkers from one to another to keep them steady in the strong winds, then guided them to safety from the mountain, accompanying them back to their vehicles at the Port ar Daf car park.

The walkers were uninjured by cold.

Huw Jones of Central Beacons MRT said: “They were all prepared for the conditions, but the wind was exceptional this morning with gusts to 80mph [129kph]. They were lucky we happened upon them.”

The incident was the team’s fourth of 2012.
