The men were found in Upper Eskdale

Two walkers were rescued after getting lost while coming down from England’s highest mountain.

The pair, in their 20s and from Surrey, made a navigational error descending from Scafell Pike yesterday, Sunday.

They called 999 and managed to describe their surroundings to emergency services.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 4.55pm and four search parties set out to look for the walkers, both on the Wasdale side of the mountain and in upper Eskdale.

A spokesperson for the rescue team said: “The two men were found close to the River Esk on the Scafell side, above the gorge section.

“After warming up inside a bivvy tent they were able to walk back down with the team and were given a lift back to their vehicle at Wasdale Head.”

The rescue, which took more than four hours, ended at 9.30pm, with 17 team members involved.
