Hartsop Dodd, scene of the rescue

A walker was rescued after a trip on a Lakeland fell led to a suspected broken ankle.

The 66-year-old man, from South Shields on Tyneside, was walking on Hartsop Dodd when he tripped and injured his leg.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called to help the walker at about 12.15pm yesterday, Tuesday, and team members treated the man, described as an experienced walker.

A doctor and paramedic from an air ambulance also helped in the rescue, though high winds prevented the walker being airlifted from the scene.

He was placed in a stretcher and lowered by rope down the side of the valley.

A spokesperson for the Patterdale team said: “Once in the valley bottom, he was transported by team ambulance to the rescue centre for onward ambulance transfer to hospital in Carlisle.”
