A couple tackling the Coast to Coast walk were rescued after getting lost on a Lakeland fell.

The 71-year-old man and 65-year-old woman rang for help yesterday afternoon after they became exhausted in the Greenup Edge area above Borrowdale.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team responded and made contact with the pair. A team spokesperson said: “They had been walking for four hours from Rosthwaite, but at this point contact was lost and could not be re-established.

“As there was a possibility that the group were in Far Easedale, we asked Langdale Ambleside [MRT] to check their side of the hill.

“As the first Keswick team vehicle was nearing Stonethwaite, further information came in from Cumbria police, which suggested they might be on the Wythburn side of Greenup Edge.

“So a small group were dropped off to go up from Stonethwaite, and the rest went round to Wythburn. This second group had been under way for about 10 minutes when a call came through from the Stonethwaite party, to say that the pair had been located close to Lining Crag.”

The full team returned to Stonethwaite in case a stretcher carry was needed for the couple, but they were able to walk to safety slowly, accompanied by rescuers.

Nine Langdale Ambleside MRT members and 12 Keswick colleagues were involved in the rescue.
