A walker was airlifted from a fell after suffering a suspected broken ankle.

The 39-year-old man slipped on a stile on Grey Knotts above Honister this afternoon.

Cockermouth and Keswick Mountain Rescue Teams responded to the call to help, as the 697m (2,287ft) fell is in the area covered by both teams.

Rescuers were alerted at about 1.10pm today, Friday, after the walker slipped near the summit of the fell.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene resulting in what a spokesperson called a ‘generous level of service’. The walker was treated at the scene and then airlifted by the helicopter to West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven for x-rays to determine whether he had fractured his ankle.

The rescuers’ callout lasted about two hours.
