A walker has died after suffering a suspected heart attack.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 7pm today after reports the 71-year-old man had collapsed on the south-western side of Buttermere Lake.

Twenty-five team members went to the aid of the man but were unable to save his life.

A team spokesperson said: “Despite treatment from first responders, North West Ambulance Service paramedics and the team, it was not possible to revive the casualty.”

The walker’s death was the second fatality of the day the Cockermouth team had to deal with. The body of a man was found this morning after a major search for a missing fellrunner.
