Walkers pass the entrance to Watlowes, scene of today's rescue

A walker was airlifted to hospital after slipping on rocks and injuring her head.

The 80-year-old was walking in Watlowes, a dry limestone valley above Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was called out at about 5.30pm today, Sunday and went to the woman’s aid.

She was treated by paramedics and members of the rescue team at the scene before being stretchered a short distance to an air ambulance, which flew her to hospital for further treatment.

It was the volunteer rescue team’s second callout of the day, and the 44th this year.
