Brown Cove, scene of the rescue

A wild camper had to be carried from a Lakeland fell in the early hours of this morning after suffering severe leg pains.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 5.50am by police after the 60-year-old called for help.

Twelve members of the team made their way to the site in Brown Cove, below Helvellyn.

The Hertfordshire man was treated at the scene and then rescuers stretchered him down to its Land Rover ambulance which then took him to the Patterdale MRT rescue centre and a waiting ambulance, which transported him to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.
