Organisers of an adventure film tour coming to Britain for the first time said they hope to involve local clubs and organisations in the event.

The Reel Rock Tour, now in its seventh year, four top-class climbing films including an account of Conrad Anker’s 20-year obsession with climbing the notorious Shark’s Fin.

Last year’s tour achieved a global audience of 65,000 people in 290 venues.

It kicks off its first UK visit at the end of this month. Organisers said: “The Reel Rock Tour is an established, exciting project from the best adventure film makers in the world.

“This year’s collection of films features amazing adventurers, alpine legends and climbing icons on the big screen as they tackle ground-breaking new feats and try to fulfil lifelong ambitions at destinations across the globe.

“The 2012 UK Reel Rock Tour will offer audiences so much more than just a film night, albeit it with the newest most inspiring adventure films around. The screenings will be spirited events where outdoors lovers and climbers alike can come together to celebrate the ultimate in adventure filmmaking.

“Giveaways will be available and audiences will also have a chance to win some great prizes each night.

“We also welcome and encourage the involvement of mountain rescue teams, climbing gyms and clubs and other organisations local to each event which fosters a strong festive feeling and community participation.”

The four films on offer are:

  • The Shark’s Fin, the story of Anker’s first ascent of this unclimbed granite buttress on the 6,310m Mount Meru in India
  • Wide Boys, the tale of two Britons, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker and their attempt on the US Century Crack route
  • The Dura Dura, in which Chris Sharma battles with Czech rising star Adam Ondra to find the world’s hardest climbing route in Sharma’s base in Catalonia
  • Honnold, the story of Alex Honnold’s attempt on the Yosemite Triple: Mount Watkins, El Capitan and Half Dome in less than 19 hours.

To celebrate the 2012 UK Reel Rock Tour, in conjunction with the Yosemite Tourism Bureau, organisers are giving away ‘the ultimate California adventure’ for two people, plus £500 of gear from The North Face as a grand Tour prize.

The prize is open to entries from anyone who visits the UK Reel Rock website. Also everyone who enters the nightly prize draws at screenings prior to 17 October will be automatically placed into the draw.

The Reel Rock Tour starts in Lancaster on 27 September. Full tour details are on the Reel rock website.
