A walker was rescued after being knocked unconscious after falling at a popular climbing crag.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team went to the walker’s aid on Saturday afternoon after the incident at Stanage Edge in the Peak District.

The rescue was one of three attended by the team in the space of three days, and took the total man-hours the volunteers have spent on callouts this year to more than 2,000.

The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance also attended the scene after the walker slipped while climbing up rocks at the site at Stanage End, at the northern end of the edge.

Martin Gorman of Edale MRT said: “As well as providing medical support, the helicopter flew team members and equipment up to the site from the A57.

“After treatment on scene, the casualty was carried to the aircraft and flown to hospital in Sheffield.

“Just as team members were settling in for the night at around 10.30pm on Saturday, we were called out to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service with an unusual incident in Stannington, Sheffield.

“A young man had fallen down a steep slope while taking a short cut home through thick woodland.

“He suffered a fractured pelvis and needed to be transported across difficult terrain to the nearest road and a waiting ambulance.

“After treatment by ambulance staff and a team doctor, the man was carefully carried to safety by team members.”

On Thursday afternoon, the team was alerted after a couple got lost on the Peak District’s highest hill.

Cloud descended while the walkers were on Kinder Scout.

Mr Gorman said: “After calling for help, they managed to locate themselves again as the team were preparing to deploy.”
